I wanted to check in and see how you are doing replacing negative imagery (via thoughts and words) with an appropriate perspective. We spoke about this earlier in the week… how your brain doesn’t recognize “negative” words (not, no, never, etc). It just recognizes pictures. I recommend replacing phrases like, “I need to cut out all the fun foods and lose some weight” with “I am having a blast eating healthy and getting leaner”. This completely re-shapes your perspective and outlook. I have had crazy success with people that I train using these simple changes.
There is an interesting trend in our culture right now where people have a hard time re-shaping their day-to-day lifestyle. However diets and weight loss programs are ever-increasing! There is certainly nothing wrong with diets, fitness challenges or weight loss programs. I believe they are useful to “jump start” change. The flaw, however, comes when people get done with their ninety day challenge or their short term cleanse, etc, and they do not translate those new habits into their life as a new lifestyle. They might even get some great results but if it stops there it is merely addressing the symptoms of the real problem rather than the origin of it. The real goal has to be to create good habits for a lifetime…and dare I say…ENJOY IT!
The reason these “perspective substitutions” (I totally just made up that phrase haha) work so well is it helps reset your outlook. What is taught to us by culture is not always (usually not) the best. Our culture says we need junk food to get through a tough, busy day or tons of sugar to have energy or something potentially damaging to our bodies to have a celebration.
As you create this shift and start to remind yourself that you actually enjoy things like fruit/vegetables and water and high quality meats (which is what you are wired for), a diet can magically turn into a lifestyle. In this new lifestyle, you get to genuinely enjoy and appreciate those things in life that are good for you AND delicious. I had a bowl of strawberries today and it seemed like such a fun treat. I was totally thankful and consequently I enjoyed it like it was a special occasion right in the middle of the day!
