You have probably heard me say before that health and fitness is not meant to be an unattainable, overwhelming thing. It is really just a lot of small, wise decisions and changes that add up over a lifetime contributing to perfect health and a sense of extreme well-being. The cool thing is these changes take hold quite quickly. So as challenging as it may seem to put down that soda and pick up a bottle of water, you ALWAYS feel better after making a wise choice!
In my experience, it can be challenging to get people to actually make changes in their life but once they do, they become hooked and want to do more. For instance, they begin by focusing on getting proper sleep…then they wake up energized… after that they want to workout hard…then they have worked so hard that they want to eat clean to get the greatest result out of their effort…and so on and so forth. Good decisions beget more good decisions. The key is constant growth. We are meant to learn and grow and expand continually.
One of my favorite ways to grow and expand is to look for healthy (or healthier) substitutions in different areas of my life. This is really an on-going process…as it should be. I am always learning things I can do better that will make me happier, stronger, healthier, more energetic, more athletic, free of fear, better looking (haha seriously), etc. I want to share with you some of my all-time favorite easy, quick, healthy substitutions.
Quick, Healthy Substitutions
1. Long slow cardio vs 20 minutes of max effort sprint intervals
*Even for people that are not comfortable running, this can be applied safely and effectively with an exercise bike or elliptical, among other methods.
*This takes far less time and creates a much greater response from your body. I.E. not only burning calories but also reprogramming your metabolism and stimulating a hormonal response (this only happens with max effort training).

2. Potato chips vs Raw, fresh veggies with salsa or guac
*This might sound strange but trust me, it is totally enjoyable.
3. Microwave popcorn vs Nuts/seeds with sea salt and cayenne or cinnamon
4. Coffee with cream/sugar vs Coffee with coconut oil

5. Sitting at the desk vs Kneeling/lunging
6. Pay for parking close to your destination vs Walking
7. Sit down meetings vs Walking meetings
8. Sugary energy drink vs Spoonful of honey/cinnamon
That should help get your creative juices flowing as you find your own healthy substitutions. Take a look around this week and assess where you might be able to upgrade your habits. Let me know if you have any gems. I would love to hear about your own healthy upgrades.
