Whether you are a business man, a student or just someone who wants to communicate with another human, you are probably logging some pretty substantial computer time. Now, I like my laptop and my smartphone as much as the next person. When used as a tool, they can greatly increase your efficiency. However, extensive hours sitting down at the desk or looking down at the phone can have considerable detrimental affects.
As you can see in the “incorrect” picture, the slouching posture actually pulls the spine out of alignment which shuts down the nervous system. Keeping your head “on top of the shoulders” where it belongs helps keep everything in balance allowing strong messages to get from your brain to your muscles.
I want to show you my favorite quick, easy methods for undoing the bad habits from sitting for long periods of time. These can be done anywhere and no equipment is needed. Check out my quick video demo below.
So, to recap:
- Set a timer when working at your desk
- Stand up every 10-15 minutes
- Squeeze glutes forward and focus on lengthening (relaxing) hip flexors
- Stand tall and reach up as high as possible
- Wall back bridge
- Lying hip bridge
- Back bridge on ground
- Iso Extreme Lunge
- Until you feel your hips relax
One of my goals with Iron Will Sports and Fitness is to give tips for the quickest, easiest changes that yield the greatest results. This simple habit shift will create a huge response. You should see back and neck pain be alleviated. You will stay more alert when working for long hours and consequently be more effective and efficient. Also, you will be much more durable in everything else you do. I.E. if you go running or throw a football after your work day, your body will be ready for it.
Remember, your body is made to move. So set those timers. Try this out and let me know how it goes.
